Arena.Xlsm Known Bug: 1004 run time error

EDIT: Fixed! Download the latest version of Arena.Xlsm here

1004 run time error (Unable to set the Text property of the Characters class).

The error pops up as soon as you kill the first enemy.

The error appears to be limited to a few players using Excel 2007, I have identified the code that is causing the problem. I need to test the fix before releasing it. If all goes well, the fix should be released next weekend. In the mean time, as a temporary workaround, if you have access to Excel 2010, you should be able to play the game free of any errors.

Sorry for the delay.

Thanks for your patience.

Doesnt work on Office for MAC, just thought i would point that out

  1. If you need a Beta tester who is suffering the 1004 run time error drop me an email.

    • Thanks for the offer! I’ll be in touch. The version of excel that is being impacted is the Excel 2007: Student Edition. I was able to get rid of the run-time error but now there are some cosmetic issues that are impacting that version that I need to deal with before releasing the next version. EDIT: Please e-mail me.

      • not only limited to student edition, i get the same error in
        Microsoft office Excel 2007 (12.0.6514.5000) SP2 MSO (12.0.6425.1000)

      • Thanks for the bug report, would you be willing to be a volunteer tester so I can verify that your issue will be fixed in the next version?

That’s what I call irony of life – publishing a role-playing game that generates a bug in the *student* edition. ;o)

Anyway – great game! (thoroughly tested at work…) Incredible how much fun is still possible with simple ASCII-graphics

Excel 2007 SP3 MSO (Same as Adam, above), only I have it as part of MS Office Professional 2007; same error report after first enemy, willing to beta test.

  5. Hi Cary. I’m a teacher looking forward to presenting your game to students as an example of what a little imagination and application of code logic can allow them to do. I also have the runtime error on 2007 v12 SP3, but it looks like you have plenty of testers. Sing out if you want more.

Same issue here, running Small Business 2007 (12.0.6665.5003) SP3 MSO (12.0.6662.5000). Willing to do some beta testing after Easter Monday if the issue is unresolved and it’s needed. (sorry for the catch, but it’s my work PC, and I’ll have no access – or desire to access it, for that matter – over the weekend).

Looks really interesting, but i have the same problem on windows 7, excell 2007… Can’t wait till Arena v.1.1 !

    • I’ve send Arena.Xlsm v1.1 to the tester group, so far so good! 🙂

Use latest version 1.3. Still get error 1004 (now and after opening xls) – Method “OnKey” . Excel 2007, windows 7 x64

    • Please send me a copy of your game file as well as let me know the specific version of excel you are using (ie. is it the non-commercial edition? If you go into Excel options and then click “resources” in the left tab, what version number appears under “about Microsoft Office Excel 2007”?). I need to be able to recreate your error in order to fix it. Does the error occur when opening the game? When starting a new game? When attempting to use keyboard controls?

I’ll try to get you up and running as soon as possible.
